WriteOut! Writing Retreats
WriteOut! is a week-long writing retreat for UIC doctoral students or UIC faculty and Bridge to the Faculty (B2F) postdocs from all disciplines who study race and/or ethnicity and policy broadly-defined. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have offered hybrid retreats. The retreats will feature accountability meetings, support from a writing accountability coach, and workshops to further your writing practice.
The retreats offer different accountability structures for different UIC scholars. The purpose of the retreat is to reach your writing goals!
Each year we offer multiple WriteOut! retreats in the spring/summer: two for faculty and postdocs and two for doctoral students.

As of 2022, WriteOut! will be held as a hybrid retreat. We want to create a space to simulate an in-person retreat as much as possible. The hybrid WriteOut! retreats will be held on Zoom and at our office where the spaces are perfect for every writing style. Our conference room and offices offer a quiet space to write while our open lounge offers single desks and a large table with lots of natural light. We have COVID-19 protocols for participants to follow.
The writing retreats provide you writing practice accountability. Although we will not be providing feedback on your prose, we will provide you a platform to develop your writing practice.
For the retreats, participants should bring their laptops, lunches on days we aren’t providing one, and any materials needed in order to write. During the hybrid retreats, we provide:
- a light breakfast each day.
- lunch a few times a week.
- some special treats during the week.
- various workshops to help the writing and publication process.
We are working on ways to maintain the momentum from WriteOut! through continued virtual and in-person Write Onsite sessions for faculty and students who wish to continue coming together to write in a supportive environment.
