About
Deana G. Lewis is a Senior Associate Director at the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Deana’s scholarly and community work focuses on transgender and cisgender Black women and girls and gender-expansive people who have experienced state violence. Her research interests include Black girlhood studies, carceral studies, the school/prison nexus, and incarceration. More specifically, Deana is interested in Black girls’ experiences with school discipline and how their experiences have been left out of discourses about the school/prison nexus and youth incarceration in general.
Outside of academia, Deana participates in and supports the work of multiple Chicago community and national organizing collectives including Love & Protect, Just Practice Collaborative, and Survived & Punished.
