About the event: Join IRRPP, the Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement, and the Institute of Government and Public Affairs for the next Policy 101 workshop which will focus on helping researchers maximize the impact of their work and learn the latest best practices in collaborative research. Panelists Alison Castro Superfine (Director of the Learning Sciences Research Institute), Kari Branham (Administrator of Research, Evaluation, & Innovation at IDHS), and Brenikki Floyd (Associate Dean for Community Engagement at the School of Public Health) will share insights on engaging school districts, community groups, and university administration to foster meaningful and impactful research partnerships.

About the Series: The goal of the Policy 101 Workshop Series is to increase the impact and visibility of UIC scholars’ research. Policy 101 workshops provide UIC faculty and graduate students with focused training that increases their ability to participate in public policy conversations. Policy 101 workshops are taught by professionals and academics who are experts at translating academic research into policy-ready documents, policy presentations and civic engagement and will be offered bi-annually on a rotating basis.

Alison Castro Superfine | Director and Professor of Learning Sciences Research Institute & Professor of Mathematics Education | UIC Learning Sciences Research Institute

Alison Castro Superfine, PhD, is director of the Learning Sciences Research Institute and professor of Mathematics Education & Learning Sciences Mathematics at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her research interests focus primarily on studying and supporting mathematics teacher learning, both practicing and prospective elementary teachers. She is currently working on projects that design and study learning environments for mathematics teacher preparation courses to support prospective teachers' development of mathematical knowledge for teaching and professional noticing.

Brenikki Floyd | Associate Dean for Community Engagement & Clinical Assistant Professor in Community Health Sciences | UIC School of Public Health

Brenikki Floyd, PhD is the associate dean for community engagement and a clinical assistant professor of community health sciences. She has years of experience in health communication, community-based participatory research, implementation and dissemination science and program evaluation. Dr. Floyd’s research focuses on the application of health communication strategies in community-based and health systems settings to improve health outcomes among racial and sexual minority populations, particularly adolescents, women and LGBTQ+ populations.

Kari Branham | Administrator of Research, Evaluation, & Innovation | Department of Human Service, Office of Firearm Violence Prevention

Kari Branham is the administrator of research, evaluation, & innovation at the Illinois Department of Human Service, Office of Firearm Violence Prevention Staff. Her expertise lies in monitoring and setting benchmarks for workload, staffing, and productivity, along with spearheading initiatives for program and process enhancements. In this capacity, Branham played a pivotal role in organizing and executing program activities vital for the successful implementation of the Reimagine Public Safety Act. She's a two-time recipient of the Social Security Administration Disability Program national awards.
