Cycle of Segregation

UIC Sociology Colloquium with Mignon Moore
The Church and the Streets: Black Sexual Minority Women in the Pre-Stonewall Era

When: April 11, 2018, 12:00 - 1:30pm

Where: Behavioral Sciences Building, Room 4105

About the event: In this presentation Moore examines the social meanings and personal experiences of homosexual behavior for black women in the pre-Stonewall, pre-Civil Rights era, and how those leanings were interpreted in their racial communities. It also argues for the influence of two historical areas of Black American life on the development of contemporary LBGT social spaces: religion and religious practice, and the informal and underground economies in black urban neighborhoods. This work is part of an on-going book project titled In the Shadow of Sexuality: Social Histories of African American LGBT Elders.
