2017 Faculty Book & Achievement Celebration

The Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy is proud to celebrate our accomplished faculty. Please join us as we gather to recognize their many and varied achievements from the past year. Here is a summary of some of the books by UIC faculty that we are honoring and celebrating.


Andy Clarno, Sociology & African American Studies

His book, Neoliberal Apartheid: Palestine/Israel and South Africa after 1994, was published by The University of Chicago Press in March 2017.


Janet Smith and John Betancur, Urban Planning and Policy

Their book, Claiming Neighborhood: New Ways of Understanding Urban Change, was published by The University of Illinois Press in September 2016.


Patrisia Macias Rojas, Sociology & Latin American and Latino Studies

Her book, From Deportation to Prison: The Politics of Immigration Enforcement in Post-Civil Rights America, was published by New York University Press in October 2016.


Johari Jabir, African American Studies

His book, Conjuring Freedom: Music and Masculinity in the Civil War’s “Gospel Army”, was published by The Ohio State University Press in March 2017.


Bill Ayers, Education

His book, Demand the Impossible!: A Radical Manifesto, was published by Haymarket Books in September 2016.


Jesus Ramirez Valles, Community Health Sciences

His book, Queer Aging: The Gayby Boomers and a New Frontier for Gerontology, was published by Oxford University Press in August 2016.


Nicole Nguyen, Educational Policy Studies

Her book, Curriculum of Fear: Homeland Security in U.S. Public Schools, was published by the University of Minnesotta Press in August 2016.
