Steven Salaita

Steven Salaita: Palestine and the Limits of Academic Freedom (Cancelled)

When: October 7, 2014 1:00 pm
Where: Student Center East, 750 S. Halsted Street, Room 605
Sponsor: Students for Justice in Palestine - U of I Chicago Chapter

Israel's military aggression in Gaza this summer resulted in the deaths of more than 2000 Palestinian civilians, including children.

Homes, schools, UN centers and hospitals were bombed. The infrastructure of Gaza was all but destroyed.

This was the reality that Professor Salaita tweeted his opposition to.  The University of Illinois at Champaign‐Urbana, which had offered him a job, then fired him on the order of the U of I board.

Do  professors  have  a  right  to  be  outraged  by  events  in  the  world  and  to  speak  about  them  forcefully outside of their classrooms? How does the new McCarthyism impact efforts to support Palestinian rights on college campuses? Are some ideas open for debate and others off limits?

Join us as Professor Salaita speaks out about Censorship and Palestine.

Professor Salaita's Oct. 6‐10 Chicago area tour is organized by the Students for Justice in Palestine chapters at Northwestern University, University of Chicago, Columbia College, DePaul University, and the University of Illinois/Chicago, and the multi‐issue LGBT organization Gay Liberation Network. Co‐sponsored by the 8th Day Center for Justice, American Muslims for Palestine, Anti War Committee, American Arab Anti‐Discrimination Committee, Chicago Area CodePINK, Chicago Area Peace Action, Committee for a Just Peace in Israel and Palestine, Evanston Neighbors for Peace, Haymarket Books,  International  Socialist  Organization,  Jewish  Voice  for  Peace ‐ Chicago,  La  Voz  de  los  de  Abajo,  March  19th  Anti‐War  Coalition,  Northwest  Indiana Veterans For Peace, Palestine Solidarity Legal Support, U.S. Palestinian Community Network, and World Can't Wait Chicago (list in formation).
