Marissa Alexander

Marissa Alexander Retrial

IRRPP is holding an educational campaign about Marissa Alexander. This is part of IRRPP's Race & Sexuality and Violence Series.

Marissa Alexander is currently facing a 60-year sentence in a Florida prison after firing a warning shot into a wall to halt her abusive estranged husband during a life-threatening beating. Marissa Alexander is a proud mother of three, a loving daughter and sister, a woman of faith with an MBA, and is a survivor of domestic violence. In 2012, Marissa was sentenced to 20 years in prison despite Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law,
the fact that she injured no one, and has no previous criminal record. Marissa successfully appealed the guilty verdict but faces a new trial
on 12/8/14.
